Hygiene as a method of pest control

When houses and yards are kept clean, there is no food for pests and nowhere for them to live and breed, and this in turn means that there are few pests. Pests can be controlled by practicing good hygiene in the following ways:

· Clean up after meals. Put food scraps in the bin, and wash and dry plates, cups, glasses, cutlery and cooking pots after use.

· Put all rubbish into the bin

· Wrap all food scraps tightly in paper before putting them in the bin

· Keep all the benches, cupboards and floors clean and free of food scraps

· Regularly clean behind stoves, refrigerators and other household appliances

· Keep food in containers with tight-fitting lids

· Use the toilet properly. Make sure that all urine and faeces goes into the pedestal pan and that the toilet is flushed after use. Toilet paper is the only kind of paper that should be flushed down the toilet.

· Make sure the toilet is clean and the cistern works correctly

· Make sure that all septic tanks and leach drains are well sealed

· Make sure that the community rubbish tip is operated correctly with the rubbish being buried regularly

· Use flyscreens to stop pests entering the house and seal holes around pipes

There is little point to having a pesticide program to control domestic pests if the relevant hygiene factors are not addressed as well. The pests will soon return if good hygiene is not maintained.

WIth the warmer weather now here expect to see an influx in the number of cockroaches.

Cockroaches do really well in humidity, the warmer the weather is, the more active they are.

Cockroaches are cold-blooded insects that thrive in warm, humid conditions. You may also see a rise in the number of bigger cockroaches that can fly.

Cockroaches like tight spaces like cracks and crevices, they are more active at night, so you should minimise available food sources by sweeping floors and washing bench tops.

THE MASSIVE battle against a tiny pest is heating up as authorities prepare to make a stand at the final frontier - Ipswich.

Fire ants. The small, destructive pests were discovered in south-east Queensland in 2001 and have been invading the neighbouring territory since.

In July, all levels of government agreed on a $411.4 million plan to eradicate the ants before they march across the rest of Australia and wreak havoc on the environment and our agricultural sector.

WEEKS of wet weather in Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Lockyer and Somerset have delayed the invasive fire ant treatment program.

The first round of a two-year eradication program was stalled as biosecurity officers were unable to treat fire ant nests in wet weather.

Acting Agriculture Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said despite the delay, residents could be assured fire ants were being eradicated under a nationally-agreed biosecurity strategy.

"The first of three rounds of bait treatment is being applied between this month and June 2018, and will continue for two consecutive years in this region to eradicate fire ants," he said.

"Obviously, it would be a waste of taxpayers' money to treat fire ant nests in wet weather."

Up to 140 staff have been hired to tackle fire ants across the state as part of the $411.4 million decade-long eradication program expected to double the effort to neutralise the threat of red imported fire ants.

The discovery at Lowood in August was the first time the destructive ants had been found in the Somerset Regional Council area, and followed a positive case at Pine Mountain in April.

Another case was confirmed at Prenzlau, near Minden, last month. Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said one of the three positive identifications were made on his property.

The Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017 - 2027 paves the way for Queensland to have a world-class fisheries management system and implementation is now underway.

This information sheet has been developed to provide guidance when seeking the services of a pest management technician. Pest management technicians use pesticides which can be hazardous to humans and pets. To ensure pest management activities are carried out in a safe and competent way, Queensland Health requires anyone carrying pest control activities for a fee to be licensed. For a pest management technician to be issued with a licence, they must gain certain qualifications appropriate to the type of pest control activity they wish to carry out. In Queensland, three different pestmanagement licences can be issued:  Pest control activity excluding timber pests  Pest control activity including timber pests  Fumigation activity. Services can you expect from a pest management technicianTypically, pest management technicians:  inspect the premises  identify the pest(s) and associated habitats  explain what condition or conditions most likely caused the pest problem  tell you the extent (if any) of the pest damage  develop and discuss an appropriate pest management plan  handle, apply and store pesticides safely during the treatment procedure  explain ways to prevent further pest outbreaks  issue certificates where required  schedule a follow-up visit to evaluate the success of the corrective actions if required.General questions to ask When making enquiries to pest management businesses regarding their services, you may wish to consider the following:  the services their quote includes  whether an inspection is included as part of the service  the pest management technician’s experience in carrying out the pest control activity you require  the preparation you may need to do prior to the activity being carried out  the pesticides used by the business and how they are applied  the safety precautions you need to take prior to and after the pest control treatment If you require termite advice or a report on termite management systems, or infestations or if you are installing a termite management system into a new building, check that the technician possesses a licence issued by Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). The German cockroach is the most common species of cockroach found throughout the world. New laws mandating the installation of photoelectric smoke alarms in all Queensland homes will make households safer, the State Government says.

Laws have been passed to make smoke alarms mandatory in all bedrooms as part of the Government's response to a coroner's report into Australia's worst house fire at Slacks Creek, south of Brisbane, in 2011.

Eleven people, including eight children, died when fire tore through the Logan property.

The house was fitted with two smoke alarms but neither had worked for several years.

Queensland smoke alarm law rollout:

By January 1, 2017: All new dwellings or substantially renovated propertiesBy January 2022: All dwellings sold or leased; all Government-owned housingBy January 2027: All domestic dwellings

Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne said the legislation passed overnight also required the smoke alarms to be interconnected, and either hardwired or fitted with a 10-year battery to ensure they gave people the best chance of survival.

Mr Byrne said says the laws would be phased in over 10 years.

"On the 1st of January 2017, photoelectric alarms will be required to be installed in homes any time a smoke alarm is being replaced or a new one is being installed in any way," he said.

"The evidence is overwhelming that interconnected smoke alarms and installing them in bedrooms greatly increases the chances of families escaping from fires unharmed.

"The Palaszczuk Government will not sit back while more Queensland families are torn apart by house fires."

The Opposition supported mandating the smoke alarms but raised concern that the time frame could put financial pressure on households.
